solar phenomena are keeping up a busy and high quality release rate in 2018 with a fifth offering already. this one is a three tracker from stl, who already released his “if time would move backwards” ep on the label earlier in the year. the title track opens the account with blown out drums trudging along in ever changing patterns. swirling, lo-fi ambience adds scale to the track and encourages you to get lost in the middle of it all. “weed detective” is ten minutes of psyched-out and stripped back drum work at an inviting mid tempo. keys dance and heavily treated vocal sounds trip you out in slow motion. last of all, “scubbu babe” has finger clicks, bright and mild crazed keys and ad libbed vocal sounds all doing gymnastics round more of those trademark drums. once again, stl proves he operates in a world of his own.

max loderbauer, who has so far made consistently engaging contributions to the arjunamusic family, is back to lend his unique interpretive skills to the master recordings for the brightbird album by joão paulo esteves da silva, mário franco and samuel rohrer. loderbauer has set himself up for a challenge, since the original album’s completely improvised flow of small-ensemble, conversational jazz feels complete enough without outside intervention. however, loderbauer’s role as electronics operator in the similarly attuned ambiq trio has already shown that, through his mastery of tone color, he has a talent for teasing out the additional hidden details within an apparently ‘complete’ sonic environment. it’s a task he manages to accomplish without ever overriding or contradicting the cohesive message provided by his collaborators.

sagmen co-founders andre salmon and aert prog team up for a solid single, featuring remixes from matteo rosolare & jojo angel, mr jefferson, as well as aert himself. individually, ecuadorian salmon has appeared on leftroom, repopulate mars, hottrax and get physical, while parisian aert prog has had output on anima somnis, laboratory records and popof’s form. launching sagmen at the end of 2017, both producers have appeared on separate releases on the label so far, however the founders now come together for a collaborative release, blending both their sounds together. ‘sagmen’ opens the release with shuffling kicks and claps whilst alarming drones and bumpy rhythms creep throughout, before daylight robbery records boss matteo rosolare teams up with greece’s jojo angel version comes bouncing in, littered with crisp percussion and shaky hums. twisted fusion and resonance records producer mr. jefferson’s take on the track rolls in after, full of thunderous tones and clanking beats. these carve the way for aert prog’s remix, which strips everything back, twisting it into moody roller.

the mar-keys is the first house band from the label stax records. during the 60’s they recorded many songs and with their first single “last night” they made it to the top of the us charts. years after this massive success they released the album “the great memphis sound”, with the support of artists like isaac hayes and booker t. jones. guitarist steve cropper shows his skills in the jazz and soul sound from the music on the album. the instrumental tracks including song classics like “the girl from ipanema”, “in the mood” and “philly dog”.
the group started in the late 50’s as the royal spades and became known as the band where a lot of musical talents marked their first step in the industry. as a backing band they worked together with artists like otis redding, wilson pickett and carla thomas.

keeno18, also known as reginald james johnson, is finally back with his third release entitled los green for ultramajic. the release was inspired by the communication plants have with everything around us, as reggie explains. in reality, the tracks are very raw techno beats, snapping celery sticks and drumming carrots.
delsins reissue arm once again looks to the revered back catalogue of lost trax for a second 12 that picks out the best of the anonymous collectives work. the ep features five cuts taken from two highly sought after eps released on tabernacle records in 2011 and 2012. the eye opens things up with punchy drum programming and the sort of sci-fi effects and synths that immediately take you to a future intergalactic world. its a weighty but emotional opener, while pulp is more twisted and urgent, with warped synth sounds and busy, bristling drums and perc all building pressure throughout. the forest resets the mood with mystic synths and mysterious atmospheres that mix ambient beauty with suggestive skeletal beats. b01 then canes through the cosmos on a detroit electro tip with slithers of synth, swollen pads and crisp hits and dominion rounds things out in hurried fashion. the restless electro drums pound away as prickly snares and cymbals, blurts of machine noise and sweeping pads all wrestle for attention and keep you on your toes. this is high octane electro and techno designed with metallic precision but oozing plenty of human feelings.

unless you re too young to know or have been living under a rock for the past twenty years, there s little chance that you haven t come across marc romboy s music in one way or another. the systematic recordings boss has had many irons on the fire since establishing his first imprint, the now defunct le petit prince - gathering an untold number of releases on labels as diverse as ovum, innervisions, rebirth or 20:20 vision in his two decades of intense activity. tracing back to 1994, when he used to rummage through the crates of delirium - the primitive incarnation of kompakt (closed and revived under its new name in 1998), the friendship between romboy and the kompakt family has largely withstood the test of time. after losing touch for a few years, romboy and michael mayer would resume contact during a festival in the south of france - a reunion that eventually led to systematic joining kompakt s distribution catalogue a couple months later.

a project 18 months in the making, marcel fengler presents a imf10, a three part compilation series detailing the past, present and future of his label index marcel fengler. part 2 focuses on the warmer and more soulful side of imf and features an outstanding array of artists making their debut for the label, all of which have a strong personal meaning to fengler. there’s fjaak, the exciting berlin trio he admires for their authentic identity and honest sound, a special shed remix of the enigmatic vril whose timeless productions continue to strike a chord with him, good friend eric cloutier who he has long wanted to get involved in imf and of course long-time label champion thomas hessler. viennas arthur robert a new face marcel discovered after he sent him tracks over facebook contributes a beautiful shimmering work to the compilation. highlighting this section of the project is the first azur track marcels new side project. he explains: ive always liked to be diverse with my music, but i also do’t want to confuse people. this is the reason why i decided to give my melodic side its own identity. my music under the marcel fengler name will go back to its roots and be more raw and rough in production terms. the final digital package will be complemented by a dj mix from thomas hessler comprised of tracks from imf10. stay tuned for parts 3 to follow, which includes originals and remixes by marcel fengler, sebastian kramer (aka redshape), luke slater, peter van hoesen and more.

critical come extremely correct once more with what is bound to be an early summer smash as a certain dub phizix picks up where the almighty marka left off. teaming up with fellow manchester scene stalwart fox proves an inspired choice here which critical just couldnt ignore, so invited him back to drop these two more astonishingly fresh tracks for this, his second outing on the label. simply put, >never been< is baaaaaad man business. a lean, stripped back percussive intro leads us to a breakdown where fox greets us with the sickest of vocal hooks that you will be trying to decipher until the end. when the tribal half-time break drops its time to bounce as the undulating b-line rolls heavy throughout with dub phizix teasing with awesome drum edits and amen shakedowns. riddim! cinematic soundscapes and a solid beats combine on >codec<, a more bass-led slab of equally dance floor drum & bass that retains the dub phizix air of originality with an experimental break the kicks like a mule. another winner without doubt from a very exciting splinter cell coming out of the north of the uk right now.

a great compilation can open the gate to another world. who knew that some of the most exciting afro-funk records of all time were actually made in the small west african country of benin? once analog africa released the first african scream contest in 2008, the proof was there for all to hear, gut-busting yelps, lethally welldrilled horn sections and irresistibly insistent rhythms added up to a record that took you into its own space with the same electrifying sureness as any favourite blues or soul or funk or punk sampler you might care to mention.
ten years on, intrepid crate-digger samy ben redjeb unveils a new treasuretrove of vodoun-inspired afrobeat heavy funk crossover greatness. right from the laceratingly raw guitar fanfare which kicks off les sympathics’ pile-driving opener, it’s clear that african scream contest ii is going to be every bit as joyous a voyage of discovery as its predecessor. and just as you’re trying to get off the canvas after this one-punch knock out, an irresistible afro-ska romp with a more than subliminal echo of the batman theme puts you right back there. ignace de souza and the melody aces’ “asaw fofor- would’ve been a killer instrumental but once you’ve factored in the improbably-rich-to-the-point-of-being-nat-king-cole-influenced lead vocal, it’s a total revelation.

lost lp from 1977, rebuilt from original tapes, by the creator of black devil disco club the french electronic music pioneer behind black devil disco club, released three seminal library albums in the seventies: suspense (1975), cosmos 2043 (1977) and the strange world of bernard fevre (1977). a fourth album called orbit ceremony, produced just a few months after remained in his home studio and never saw the light, sentenced to almost 40 years in the devil’s vault. by chance, while working on the re-issues, bernard fevre recently found the original lost tapes of orbit ceremony, including the multi-tracks which he remastered himself. spacy moogs, weird clavinet, and cosmic analog drum machines: it’s all here. the quirky, cosmic library music found on this long-deleted 70′,,,,s science-fiction-themed album is full of burbling synths and off-kilter melodies. there’s only one man on this planet able to produce such a crazy sound. as soon as you press play you know you’ve embarked on a special and unique ‘back to the future’ trip. don’t worry, fasten your seat belt and relax. captain fevre is taking care of everything.

thoma bulwer returns with jandaze , his latest ep via parasol culture featuring long-time partner in crime anna wall. it follows parasol 001 their first joint vinyl release, that sold out on the shelves gaining support from the likes of mood ii swing and cab drivers plus on the airwaves via nts. their jandaze ep has already been doing the rounds on the dj circuit in hackney wick and beyond. ‘patience’ was the result of a late night jam session with sync boxes, groove benders and the classic tr-909. after much fine-tuning, it’s been tried and tested by cinthie on her recent australia tour and is set to be a staple club cut for this summer. although ‘insouciant’ means a casual lack of concert, a lot of work went into making this one. it’s the most laid-back of the bunch, with smallville-esque juno 106 melodies perfect for the afterparty or warm up session. this goes out to the post-nyd loft party crew in the wick where it was played for the first time. try pronouncing this one at 7am in the morning… ‘fridge speed’ is a minimal house cut influenced by thoma’s garage roots. think rudely placed analogue synth stab melodies, ‘tuff’ skippy drums and big subs ideal for early hours and “it’s a london thing” house sets. ‘egress’ was made with long jam takes from thoma’s modular system. deep, dubby beats, evolving synths and textures make up this track thats been road-tested on the world famous fabric room 1 sound system by voigtmann in his extended set before ricardo villalobos. current support comes from maya jane coles, archie hamilton franck, roger, cinthie, voigtmann, john dimas.
